TOWN councillors are exploring ways in which they might be able to support the operation of Minehead Harbour.

It follows controversial increases in harbour fees imposed by Somerset Council and the installation of a chain to close slipway access.

The new fees have already forced the closure of the volunteer-run Minehead Sailing and Watersports Club.

Residents have also expressed fears somebody could suffer serious injury or death if they tripped over the chain, particularly in the dark.

Minehead Mayor Cllr Craig Palmer said a meeting was held recently with unitary authority leader Cllr Bill Revans to discuss the harbour issues.

Cllr Palmer said a further meeting was planned to determine if the town council could ‘provide a supporting role’.

Cllr Mandy Chilcott, who represents the town on the Somerset authority, said she attended a harbour site meeting with unitary executive councillors and raised concerns over fees, the chain, and current signage.
