A TINY Exmoor village has received a giant boost from one of the country’s top four supermarkets to help improve its children’s play area.
A cheque for nearly £7,000 was presented after Morrisons Minehead community champion Sharon Mainwaring nominated the Timberscombe John Arlott Playground Association for support.
The charity, whose trustees are the parish council, operates and maintains Timberscombe’s play area.
Play area trustees chairman Kathy Walker said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this grant from the Morrisons Foundation.
“The grant will enable us to buy outdoor gym equipment for the play area.
“The children and their parents are looking forward to keeping fit at the same time as meeting their friends.”
The £6,953 grant came from the The Morrisons Foundation which supports charities making a positive difference in local communities.
It provides grants of up to £10,000 and also offers match-funding and since launching in 2015 it has given more than £37 million to help good causes across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Parish council chairman Kathy Attwater said the Timberscombe play area’s large slide and wooden structure was well past its best and now needed replacing.
She said it was hoped that sufficient funds could be raised to replace it with outdoor gym equipment suitable for teenagers and adults.
Cllr Attwater said: “Help is always needed to raise funds and our amended constitution allows for non-council members to be co-opted to the committee.
“The parish council would be pleased to hear from anybody who would like to help us raise funds or join the committee.”
Cllr Attwater thanked Cllr Scott Walker for carrying out weekly checks on the play area’s equipment and completing minor repairs.
“As a result of our work, the play area received a good annual inspection,” she said.
