MORE than 7,000 woman across the Tiverton and Minehead constituency had been ‘betrayed’ by the new Labour Government, MP Rachel Gilmour said this week.
Mrs Gilmour said data revealed there were 7,030 WASPI women (Women Against State Pension Inequality) affected by Labour’s decision not to compensate those hit by changes to the State pension age.
She said Labour in opposition before the General Election backed the campaigners but had now betrayed them and she would continue to fight against a decision that was ‘simply wrong’.
Ms Gilmour intervened in Parliament on behalf of WASPI women and said the Government should ‘urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision’.
She said: “The Government has turned its back on millions of women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s recommendations, and that is frankly disgraceful.
“The Liberal Democrats will fight for WASPI women in Tiverton and Minehead.”
