RESIDENTS of the Abbeyfield Society’s independent-living home in Porlock have been embarking on a heart-warming journey of companionship and exploration with children from the village’s Oaks Nursery, in St Dubricius First School.

The unique partnership has brought together two generations to foster mutual understanding, learning, and joy.

Each week, the children have been visiting The Laurels, in High Street, creating an environment of shared experiences and lasting friendships.

Together, young and the elderly engage in various activities, including gardening, walks, conversations, and savouring biscuits.

Head teacher Jo Smith said: “The anticipation and happiness that fill the air are evident as both the residents and the children look forward to their cherished time spent together.”

Children from Porlock's Oaks Nursery and residents of the village Abbeyfield home enjoy an open-top bus outing together.

A recent highlight was a trip on the Exmoor Coaster bus to view the breathtaking sights of West Somerset’s beautiful coastline.

Journeying from Porlock to Lynmouth, the special outing brought the generations even closer as they laughed, shared stories, and ate ice cream.

Mrs Smith said: “The experience left an indelible mark on their memories, creating treasured moments that will be cherished by both the young and the elderly.

“Our school and nursery love getting involved in the local community, and this partnership is a brilliant way to bring generations together.

“They learn so much from each other and really look forward to their time each week.”

She said the inter-generational connection between Abbeyfield residents and Oaks Nursery children served as a ‘shining example of the positive impact that can be made when different age groups come together’.

“The children gain valuable insights and wisdom from the elderly residents, while the latter are filled with youthful energy and joy through the interactions with the young ones,” said Mrs Smith.

“The heart-warming collaboration between Abbeyfield and Oaks Nursery is a testament to the power of community engagement and the immeasurable benefits it brings.

“It reinforces the idea that fostering inter-generational connections can create an enriching and fulfilling environment for all involved.”

Oaks Nursery and St Dubricius School are part of the Moorland Federation, and are known for a commitment to ‘holistic development’.

The nursery provides a nurturing and engaging environment for children, encouraging them to grow, learn, and develop their unique potential.
