BRAVE six-year-old Lee Chidgey is pictured being presented with a Gold Award from his school for helping to rescue a man trapped under a pile of wood.

Williton Pottery owner Martin Pettinger was unable to move a muscle after around 14 pieces of MDF fell on top of him at his Half Acre workshop last week.

He shouted out for help and by pure chance Lee and his mum were passing by on their way to the village's St Peter's School.

Mrs Chidgey ran off to find help, leaving the little boy to stay with Martin and comfort him.

That's when gutsy Lee swung into action, helping to release Martin, who asked him to find a strong piece of wood to use as a fulcrum so Martin could escape from the crushing weight.

Lee returned with the wood and together they managed to lift the MDF off.

Martin said: "I was extremely grateful to Lee for helping to get me out from under the pile of MDF.

"I was in a lot of pain and I thought my leg was about to break, and my head is still ringing now.

"You hear so much bad stuff about kids doing this and that these days and it was nice to see a little lad doing a good deed."

When Lee arrived at school that day the news soon spread until the head teacher heard and decided he should be rewarded for his act of bravery.

Lee's mum said she was "very proud" of the way her son reacted in the situation.

"Lee actually heard the man calling out first and when we ran across the road we saw him lying on the floor. He did look in a lot of pain," she said.

"I left Lee with him and went to get help but I think the man thought Lee would run off because he was left with a complete stranger."

As well as Lee picking up his Gold Award last Friday, Martin gave him a mug he had made as a thank you for his help.
