STUDENTS from the West Somerset Community College in Minehead have been busy raising money for this year's annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal - with a little help from a six-foot-tall 'poppy man'.

Public services students from the college used around 500 poppies, chicken wire and newspaper to construct the figure, which has been used to publicise the appeal in the foyer of Minehead's new Morrisons supermarket.

The students have also given their time to sell poppies at the store and at Minehead Town Hall, as well as around the college campus.

Yesterday (Thursday), schoolchildren, workers and residents of all ages came to a standstill at 11am to mark Armistice Day.

Veterans gathered at the Burma Star Memorial in Blenheim Gardens, Minehead, to pay their respects to the fallen of World War One.

Remembrance Day services will also be held across the district on Sunday in memory of those who fought in conflicts across the world, right up to the present day.

In Williton, the Royal British Legion will be holding a service in the village's Methodist Church on Tower Hill on Sunday at 3pm.

In Minehead, there will be a service at the Alcombe Memorial in Manor Road at midday on Sunday, followed by the annual parade through the town.

The parade will muster at the Royal British Legion branch headquarters in Bancks Street at 2.30pm, before heading along the Avenue and Friday Street for the traditional church service.

This year the service will be held for the first time in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Townsend Road, starting at 3pm.

After the service a coach will take people up to the war memorial on North Hill at about 3.45pm, before returning to Bancks Street.
