A YOUNG woman died after buying and taking a combination of illegal drugs during an adults only weekend break in Minehead.
Kerry Leigh, aged 33, a fire surveyor who lived in Salisbury, had been staying in the town’s Butlin’s holiday resort at the time.
She died on the last day of a Big Weekender event she was attending at the resort on Sunday, February 25, last year.
Emergency services were called but Ms Leigh died despite the attempts of medical personnel to save her life.
Somerset Senior Coroner Samantha Marsh said: “She had taken illicit drugs acquired from a person she had never met before.
“She suffered respiratory complications caused by the combined effect of the drugs and alcohol.
“Despite medical intervention it was not possible to save her life.”
An inquest hearing was held in Wells Town Hall when Mrs Marsh recorded a conclusion that Chester born Ms Leigh’s death was was ‘drug related’ and caused by ‘multidrug and ethanol toxicity’.
A Butlin’s spokesperson refused to comment on the incident this week, but pointed to the company’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy on drugs.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a man in his 30s had been arrested the day after the death of Ms Leigh on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply.
The man was arrested in Ilfracombe by officers from the Devon and Cornwall force and was currently still on release while under investigation as police inquiries were continuing.
Butlin’s promotes its Big Weekender breaks as ‘the ultimate adults-only weekend away’.
The company’s website said: “Think of it as the full festival experience, incredible music including big name headline acts, endless daytime activities, great food and drink, and your very best mates.
“No worries, no work, no mud or tents or wellies, but one of the best and biggest weekends of your life.”
