RESIDENTS across the West Somerset and Wellington areas are among 100,000 people in the county eligible for a spring vaccination against the deadly Covid-19 virus.

NHS Somerset is urging them to take up the offer of a potentially life saving vaccination by using a national booking system which has appointments available from April 1 for people who are at increased risk of serious illness from the virus.

The UK recently marked five years since the start of the first lockdown when Covid took hold, but despite the passing of time, the virus still kills.

Official data shows nearly 3,500 people have died in England and Wales due to coronavirus so far this winter.

Vaccines provide protection against severe disease, hospitalisation, and can protect those most vulnerable from death.

This spring, the NHS is offering vaccines to people who are at increased risk of serious illness from the virus, including those aged 75 years and older by June 17, residents of care homes for older adults, and those with a weakened immune system.

NHS Somerset senior reporting officer for vaccinations Shona Turnbull-Kirk said: “For clinically vulnerable and older people, Covid-19 can still be very dangerous and even life-threatening.

“Protection fades over time, so it is important to get your jab if you are eligible.

“It is quick and easy to boost your immunity and will give you the protection you need for the months ahead.

“The vaccine has saved countless lives, prevented thousands from needing hospital treatment, and helped us live with the virus without fear or restrictions.”

Vaccinations are available at GP surgeries, pharmacies, and community clinics across Somerset, making it easy and convenient for eligible individuals to book an appointment.

There will also be walk-in locations across the county.

Appointments can be booked via the NHS website, the NHS app, and by calling 119.

More information is available by visiting the NHS website.

The online booking system opened on Tuesday (March 25), and if you are housebound, aged 75 years or older, or immunosuppressed, your NHS team or GP practice will contact you to arrange an appointment before June 17.
