A PERMANENT memorial could be created on the harbourside in Watchet in tribute to the town’s ‘much-loved’ street sweeper Nigel Bridger following his sudden death last month.

Town councillors discussed the memorial idea on Monday (March 10) and were supportive of it, but recognised permission would be needed from Somerset Council, which owns the Esplanade.

It will now be put to a meeting of the town council’s recreation and tourism committee next week on Thursday, March 20.

More than £1,000 has been raised from an online appeal by resident Linda Bulpin in response to hundreds of condolences received by Mr Bridger’s family.

Ms Bulpin said Mr Bridger, who was employed for many years by grounds maintenance contractors idverde UK, had ‘worked tirelessly’ for the Watchet and Williton areas.

She said: “I, like many others, feel his dedication to the Watchet area needs to be honoured.

“I hope the people of the area will show their appreciation of this very special man who worked tirelessly for the area.

“Support for the family and a memorial have been suggested but the family will make the final decision.”

Mr Bridger’s wife Verity said on social media: “I have been devastated by his sudden death.

“I cannot tell you how comforting it is to know how loved Nigel was by the people of Watchet.

“Thank you everyone, your support is overwhelming.

“You have all been wonderful and I am really touched by your kindness.”

Mr Bridger’s nephew Wayne Bridger also thanked everybody who had donated to the fund-raising appeal and appreciated from people’s comments how his uncle was a ‘very much loved and respected man’.

He said: “I will make it my goal to visit Watchet on a regular basis.

“I always spoke to Nigel about moving down that way, due to the friendly, peaceful, and calming atmosphere of the area.”
