DRESSED as Santa, a 82-year-old Watchet woman plans to abseil down a 60ft Cheddar Gorge cliff on Sunday (December 1) to raise money for a local hospice’s Christmas appeal.
“It ought to be quite an adrenaline rush and I need more of those at my age,” said campaigner and fund-raiser Sam Westmacott, who hopes that her cliffhanger will raise at least £2,000 for Taunton’s St Margaret’s hospice Jump into Christmas Santa Abseil.
She added: “I think I will be the oldest person doing this”
A hospice spokesperson said: “Some of our most dedicated supporters are taking on this unforgettable experience.
“Each participant has pledged to raise at least £125. The money could fund essential family support for a child or young person grieving the loss of a parent - something especially meaningful during the Christmas season.”
Sam, who has already raised over £1,700, said she was taking the plunge after having personal experience of the hospice’s work.
“I first came across St Margaret’s when my mother died. We cared for her at home but in the process I learned what a fantastic service they offer.
“I am so grateful to the nurses who helped make my mother's last days better than they might have been.
“Since then I have had many opportunities to observe the work they do supporting families as mother, brother, father, sister or grandparent passes through their final weeks or days in hospice care.”
Sam expressed her grateful thanks to everyone who had donated so far. To contribute visit https://stmargaretshospice.enthuse.com/pf/samw
