THE West Somerset Food Cupboard (WSFC) has continued to break unwelcome records in its efforts to help families suffering ‘food insecurity’.

The charity, founded in 2007, works out of the Church of St Michael the Archangel, Alcombe, providing emergency food boxes.

Last month, it distributed through partner agencies 132 emergency food parcels, the highest May figure recorded since its records began.

A spokesperson for the charity said it was the sort of number they would expect to see in January.

They said: “We are so grateful for your donated food and support.”

West Somerset has been ranked in the worst 20 per cent for food affordability across England.

On Tuesdays, WSFC also runs The Local Pantry, which marked its second anniversary last month and now helps more than 100 families a year.

In January, the charity was presented by Somerset Lord Lieutenant Mohammed Saddiq with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
