A CEREMONY took place on the opening day of Somerset’s first home championship match of the season against Worcestershire to honour Mary Elworthy-Coggan, one of the county’s most devoted and long serving members who passed away before Christmas at the age of 89.

Jamie Cox, the Chief Executive, gathered with a large group of members, representatives from the Somerset board and members of staff, plus many former players in what has affectionately become known as Mary’s Corner in the Long Room of the Colin Atkinson Pavilion.

Chairman Richard Brice then paid tribute to Mary, who for many years resided in Fitzhead, describing her as the doyenne of Somerset County Cricket Club who along with her husband Mike raised considerable sums of money for the club and over the years.

The vice chairman then presented the club with a wooden plaque to hold pride of place every day on the table where Mary always sat in the Long Room.
