MINEHEAD were involved in a 1-1 home draw against Westfield in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.

With both teams near the top of the league table - in third and fourth places with equal points - a competitive match was anticipated.

Westfield started the quicker and looked the more threatening in the opening 20 minutes without testing Kyran Wilkins in the Minehead goal. Minehead grew into the game during the half and had a fine ‘goal’ by Toby Waghorn very dubiously ruled out for offside. It was goalless at the interval.

.A good game of football ebbed and flowed after the break and Minehead took the lead when the Westfield keeper Billy Barter misjudged a sliding tackle outside of his area allowing Josh Elston to put the Blues 1-0 up with a shot into an empty net.

Later in the second half Minehead made substitutions, Scott Kivell for Sam Jackson, Martyn Phillips for Will Singleton-Voss and finally Guy Burns for Toby Waghorn.

Minehead held firm until the 85th minute when the Westfield striker Sam Gregory got half a yard inside the box to lob Kyran. The game ended with both teams sharing the points leaving their top of the table positions unchanged.

It was a good Minehead performance but a draw was probably a fair result between two well matched teams in a game played in the right sprit.

Former Taunton Town defender George Painter had an excellent game in the centre of the Minehead defence, using all his experience in a match which was important to both sides .

The referee was good although he pulled up with a leg injury in the first half but managed to continue to the end of the game. He always tried to play the advantage but would pull it back if no advantage was gained which led to a free-flowing match for spectators to watch.

The Minehead squad was (alphabetically): Louis Burge, Josh Elston, Oli Hall, Sam Heath, Sam Jackson, Stefan Phillips, George Painter, Will Singleton-Voss, Toby Waghorn, Kyran Wilkins and Ryan Wilkins. Subs: Martyn Phillips, Scott Kivell and Guy Burns (all used). Man of the Match George Painter.

Elsewhere in the division, Congresbury maintained their one-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 home win over Clutton. They have played one game less than second-placed Ashton & Backwell United who were 3-1 home winners over Peasedown Miners Welfare. At the other end of the table, Ashcott are still without a point this season after they lost 3-1 at home to Wrington Redhill. They are now six points adrift of fellow strugglers Saltford who won 1-0 at home to Keynsham Town Reserves. It was only their second victory of the season.
