MINEHEAD are through to the semi-finals of the Somerset Girls Football League’s Under 16 Cup after a 2-0 away victory over Wembdon.
The closest either side came to scoring in the first half was from an unlikely mistake from the Wembdon goalkeeper, the ball bouncing past her, leaving Evie in tow as the ball brushed the outside of the post with Evie unable to get there to tap in.
In the second half a ricochet in the middle left Ruby with the ball; the versatile Ruby, who has shown her abilities to put balls into dangerous areas throughout the season, did exactly that. Her looping ball caused chaos at the heart of the Wembdon defence. Then skipper Erin forced her way through with the ball still bouncing; the onrushing keeper came out to prevent Erin getting a shot away!
Erin’s calmness in this moment was the epitome of the player she’s become. It seemed like the best way to score was to use the bounce and put it over the goalkeeper; Erin, though, struck it underneath the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net. The deadlock was finally broken, and the girls had their sights set on yet another win.
With the referee indicating there was a minute left, Minehead set out in a defensive shape to ensure there was no more late drama. However, there was to be one more goal, but it went to Minehead.
After great work from Mabel, a Wembdon team chasing an equaliser left a gap on the left that Mabel exploited and calmly slotted it into the far right-hand side. It was Mabel’s 25th of the season, sealing a Minehead victory and a passage into the last four of the Somerset Girls League Cup, where they’ll face League runners-up Purnell.
