After a long break, Minehead were back in action in the Under 16 section of the Somerset Girls League playing at home on the scenic Dunster pitch for the first time.

The girls, on their return, entertained supporters with a brilliant team display to chalk up a 10-0 victory over Huish.

Minehead set off flying with Erin opening the scoring with a neatly curled effort from the left after great working cutting in. Minehead quickly doubled their lead as the long-range expert Jaz scored a trademark edge-of-the-area goal, the ball being too high for the goalkeeper as it snuck its way under the crossbar.

After this fast start, the game went into a small lull. Minehead continued to dominate throughout with Lilly & Alana in the heart of midfield doing everything right, Lilly with her unbelievable technical skills and Alana with her excellent tenacity. Lots came through these two as chances kept coming Minehead’s way with Mabel & Evie unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.

As the half neared completion, Jaz once again popped up on the edge of the area. After good work from Emily on the left, she found Jaz who struck first time, low, hard, and precise, leaving the goalkeeper unable to react quickly enough. The half-time whistle sounded soon after with Minehead leading 3-0.

The second half started and Minehead visibly went into another gear. Performances across the pitch were raised. Any hope of Huish breaking the back line was slim as Bonita, Izzy, Lucy, and Ruby formed an excellent defensive unit. Lots of Minehead’s success in the half came from the defensive line as Bonita dictated everything and Ruby was picking intricate passes for fun.

With this solid foundation at the back, the attacking players had licence to thrill! The attacking trio of Erin, Mabel, and Evie, who’ve been so prolific this season with a combined 46 goals between them, were ready to add to their tallies after near misses in the 1st half.

Back out on the left, Erin scored a quick-fire double to bag her hat-trick. With Erin out-wide, it opened up space for Mabel, who came into the match with 18 goals in seven appearances. Unusually, not yet on the scoresheet, Mabel also secured a quick-fire double with her trademark pacy runs breaking the Huish back-line.

Following this, Evie bagged her 11th of the season. The hard-working winger found herself with acres of space in the box, giving her enough time to find her spot and finish calmly. After this flurry of goals, the half seemed to fly by.

In the closing stages, Erin added her 4th with a cute left-foot finish before Huish scored an own goal to close proceedings on a 10-0 win for the Blues, on what could’ve been a tricky day rotating between 4 outfield players playing as goalkeepers.

This was a fine, fine display from Minehead as they reach the half-way mark with a near-perfect record with 7 victories, 1 draw, and 0 losses. The girls look forward to the visit of Wellington this Saturday, looking to build some momentum heading into the 2nd half of the season.

Meanwhile, the current leaders of the division are Purnell Sports who have six more points than Minehead but have played three more matches.

Wembdon are only a point behind Sports but have played two more games than the leaders.
