With our manager Chris’s advice being to enjoy the game and not worry about where Porlock finished in the league, they ended up producing one of our best team performances of the season to gain a 4-1 victory over their rivals.
And of course it was even more enjoyable as they came out winners which guaranteed them of second spot in the league.
However, it was Pen Mill who took the lead after a defensive mistake, but Porlock quickly put this behind them and repeatedly put the Pen Mill defence under pressure. The home side’sr equaliser was slightly fortuitous in that a Pen Mill defender slipped, allowing Aimee to run through and slot the ball home to level the scores.
Porlock’s second goal came from a long goal kick, and with Chloe running at full pelt she managed to get the ball in the box, and although her initial shot was saved she managed to tuck home the rebound.
Porlock created numerous other opportunities in the first half with some great passing and through balls, but with Pen Mill playing a high line they kept finding themselves on the wrong end of offside decisions.
In the second half Porlock started sharply with great link up play resulting in an early corner. Both sides had chances to score, with both goalies making good saves. Porlock’s defence stood firm despite either carrying or returning from injuries, with all the team showing tenacity in battling for the ball.
Porlock’s third goal came as a result of winning one such battle for the ball on the right side, releasing Kayleigh down the right wing who used her pace to get into the box and put the ball in the back of the net.
More accurate passing resulted in another chance for Kayleigh who this time chipped the goalie with a clinical finish.
Another plus for Porlock was not conceding from corners, and all players can be proud of their performance.
There were several nominations for player of the match, with Kayleigh Campbell-Farmer eventually topping the votes. Porlock’s team was: Hannah, Izzy, Chris, Rhiannon, Lauren, Julie, Aimee, Georgia, Helen, Kayleigh, Sarah and Chloe.
*Porlock remain six points behind new champions Staplegrove who have completed their fixtures, losing only one game throughout the season.
Porlock’s last league match is away to bottom side Crewkerne Rangers Ladies on Sunday, February 23. They have a cup tie at home to Wellington Ladies on the following Sunday.
