MINEHEAD and West Somerset Golf Club’s year came to an end with the Presentation Evening at the weekend when an excellent turn out enjoyed a buffet supper.
This was followed by the presentations and an introduction to the incoming captains Mens – Martin Hole; Ladies – Ginette Bowyer and Seniors – Bob Arthington.
The Presentation Evening was organised by Glenn Ross, who is the general manager, and the catering staff who all contributed to such an enjoyable evening, so thanks to everyone.
The Sunday morning session commenced with the Captains’ Drive In, following which there was a shotgun Bowmaker competition which saw 20 teams taking part.
The winners of the competition with 73 points were Glenn Ross, Daniel Ross and John Perkins. In second place with 70 points came Mick Bovingdon, Luke Taylor and Adrian Ryan, while third on countback were Dorrien Bickerstaff, Guy Hewson and Francis Hewson with 69.
Everyone then gathered in the clubhouse where the outgoing Ladies’ Captain Sarah Hill presented a cheque for £1,135.00 to her chosen charity The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance - a wonderful effort - while outgoing Mens’ Captain, Bob Arthington presented a cheque for £3,815.00 to Elliot’s Touch - again, a splendid sum which the club should be proud.
On Monday a dry spring morning saw the Minehead Seniors start a busy week with a Foursomes competition.
In a close competition, Dave Walmsley and Steve Waterman took first position on countback with 39 points, just ahead of Tony Connolly and Edward Frewin. Third place went to Malcolm Bruce and Graham Smith with 36 points.
Mild and benign conditions awaited the Seniors for their Bowmaker competition on Wednesday. In first place with a magnificent 87 points were Willie Brown, Trevor Stephens and Roger Green. five ahead of Andy Giles, Dave Ball and Graham Smith. Sandy Lyons while Tony Connolly and Martin Hole were third with 79.
The end of the week saw the Seniors play a Medal qualifier off yellow tees. Twenty-eight entrants braved a cold wind that gradually picked up during the morning. The winner with an excellent round of 67 was Tim Evans, followed by Andy Hodgson with 69. Third place was taken by Bob Arthington with 72 on countback from John Burrow.
The winner of the gross eclectic score with 60 points was Martin Hole, ahead of Mark Ruttley in second with 61 and Dave Oatridge also on the same score. The winner of the nett eclectic score and taking the Charles Eve Trophy was Edward Frewin with 46, ahead of Nigel Moore and Pete Heddercott both on 48.
