THE highlight of the Minehead Seniors Golf week was the final of the Porlock Cup that was played on Tuesday between Andrew Coward and Nigel Trevelyan.
It was ‘nip and tuck’ throughout with never more than one hole in it until the 16th when Andrew found himself dormy 2 down.
Finishing gross 3 and 3 on the final two holes, the match went to the 19th where Andrew clinched it with an excellent second shot to the green. A thoroughly well deserved victory and many congratulations to the now three times winner of the Porlock Cup.
The midweek competition saw a return to falling temperatures. A pairs Pine-amble was played and despite the extra layer there were several good scores returned in what turned out to be a close competition.
Roger Read and Nigel Trevelyan took the honours with a nett 60. In second place with 61 were Mike O’Keefe and Trevor Stephens while Willie Brown and Roger Green came third on count back with a nett 62.
Minehead Seniors played their first friendly home match of the year this week, managing a 4-2 victory over Taunton & Pickeridge GC. The Avalon Seniors lost 4-1 away at Weston-super-Mare GC.
The groundstaff have been very much in evidence in recent weeks preparing the course for the Open Week which commences on Friday.
This is one of the key weeks in the golfing calendar and according to Glenn Ross, General Manager, entry numbers have already surpassed last year’s figures in all competitions by some margin.
This encouraging news together with a dry spell of weather forecast bodes well for the week ahead. Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club look forward to welcoming Visitors and Members alike for what we all hope will be an enjoyable festival of golf for everyone.
