WITH Spring’s much heralded arrival and temperatures climbing, Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors started the week with a Stableford which was played off the white tees.

There was plenty of interest in this competition and it was good to see a return to form for Chris Durman who won with 38 points. Mark Watson took second place with 37 points, while Nigel Moore with 35 points anchored third position.

The semi-finals of the Porlock Cup were also played this week, both of which were tight affairs. Andrew Coward managed to overcome Mark Watson by two holes in the first, while it took the 21st hole to separate Dave Oatridge and Nigel Trevelyan in the second semi-final; Nigel eventually taking the honours. The final of this competition will be played later this month.

The play-offs for the Trafalgar Tankard were also completed during the week, with Dave Oatridge and Roger Green winning the Tankard for the third consecutive year with 42 points against Andy Hodgson and Paul Saunders who scored 40 as runners up, in what was another high scoring and close match. Martin Hole and Bob Arthington took third place against Trevor Stephens and Dave Ball.

Many congratulations go to all four pairings for some very consistent golf played in a variety of weather conditions throughout the winter months.

On Friday, Minehead Seniors played a Stableford competition off the yellow tees. For the first time this year, the fairways and greens on the course had hardened and there was a discernable run on the ball. The scoring from those taking part also reflected the improved conditions.

In first place on count back with a superb 41 points was Willie Brown. Frazer Lawrence claimed second position while Paul Thompson came third with 39 points.
