MINEHEAD Ladies travelled south to not-so-sunny Devon to play the return hockey fixture against Sidmouth and Ottery whom Minehead beat in their last encounter in November - but could not complete the season’s double over their rivals, losing 4-1..

The match began very much back and forth, both teams determinedly pressing high and attacking fiercely. Minehead had many strong advances forged by Hayes, Chilcott, Lancaster and Tisshaw through to the attacking quarter. Sidmouth, however, were ruthless on the counter but solid defensive work from Buller, Bailey and Koppa kept them at bay. Eventually a flick over a defender’s stick put them ahead. Superb goalkeeping from Weetch ensured the score remained 1-0 at half time.

Minehead started the second half with a new desire to even the game and pushed forwards with creative plays and quick exchanges between members of the front line. Unfortunately, these attacks were short lived when Sidmouth struck again with a hit from a short corner. A burst of energy and slick interplay saw Sparks and Tisshaw work their way up field before Tisshaw lifted the ball past the keeper, the ball thudding triumphantly against the backboard.

With renewed energy Minehead searched desperately for another goal, but the opposition won a penalty flick, which was slotted home to extend their lead. A late breakaway from the home team saw the score 4-1 leaving Minehead to battle until the final whistle.

The Minehead Auto Body Repair player of the match was Jan Weetch
