MINEHEAD kept themselves on course for a top-three finish in Division Two of the Under 14 section in the Taunton Youth League with a 4-3 away win at Wembdon Dragons. Before the start of the game the teams observed one minute’s silence for 10 year old Poppy who sadly lost her life last week.
Jacob Fouracre, Minehead’s leading scorer, tucked away an easy chance to put his side ahead after only five minutes.
However, Wembdon scored an equaliser in the 26th minute. Not content with drawing level the hosts went ahead almost immediately. Wembdon had their tails up and Minehead looked second best all over the pitch. On the half hour mark, they made it 3-1 when, following a handball in the box, Wembdon were awarded a penalty, which they duly converted.
The visitors looked in disarray, but with halftime looming, Theo Arkell planted the seed of a comeback with a well taken volley from a corner to make it 3-2 at the break.
Minehead went close to scoring in the opening stages of the second half but couldn’t get the equaliser. After several near misses they got their reward in the 47th minute when Jacob Fouracre fired an absolute rocket past the Wembdon ‘keeper from 18 yards to make it 3-3.
Despite their dominance in possession, Minehead were limited to a corner in the 56th minute and an effort from Zak which was well dealt with by the ‘keeper a couple of minutes later. Wembdon were countering well however and the Minehead ‘keeper Harry Milton had to be alert.
Minehead were creating chances and were doing well from corners, putting sustained pressure on the Wembdon back line, with Aaron heading just over in the 64th minute. Eventually the pressure told when, in the 67th minute, Jake Delanty-Mitchell showed a real poacher’s instinct to slam home for a crucial victory.
