WATCHET Town's away game against title-rivals Staplegrove in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League on Saturday (April 20) is being billed The Match of the Season.
It's a must-win game for both sides. The Taunton team have a three-point lead over Watchet and a superior goal difference with one fixture remaining.
Watchet must take all three points against the Grove and if they do they may still have to beat ninth-placed Ashcott on Saturday, May 4, to be crowned champions. Yatton are still not out of it.
The odds would favour Staplegrove winning simply because they are the home side. But Watchet have gone 15 matches without losing and their tails are up. They certainly are not going to lie down and spectators are in for a real treat.
Watchet club spokesman Nicky Sully said: "The players deserve a lot of credit for what they have achieved this season. We started the season wanting to consolidate, so this is a nice bonus.
"As far as I know we did not pick up any injuries on Saturday so we should be at full strength.
"I thought it was a comfortable victory over Saltford (4-0) in the end on Saturday. Having got this far, it would have been disappointing if we had missed out against Saltford. Now, of course, it all rests on the last two games which is something we never expected when the season got underway."
Meanwhile, Minehead's run of away games to complete their season in the county league continues on Saturday when they visit their old foes Peasedown Miners Welfare, based between Radstock and Bath who are currently level on points with third placed Middlezoy Rovers Reserves.
The Miners Welfare club's history against Minehead dates back precisely 100 seasons when they both competed in the Western League. Bizarrely, the first match between the two sides, in December 1923, saw Minehead win 8-1 at The Rec, with the goals coming from A Venables (4) Harry Sully (2) and H Macey (2).
The most recent meeting between the clubs at Peasedown in October, 2016 saw Minehead inflict the same scoreline on their opponents, with the goal-scorers being Damion Redman, Max Smith (2) Matt Cracknell, Rob Vickers, Callum Barnfield, Harry Scatchard and an own goal.
The three teams currently lying above Peasedown in the promotion places are the nearest clubs to Minehead geographically (Staplegrove, Watchet and Middlezoy Rovers Reserves) meaning that local derbies could be limited by the luck of the balls in cup draws.
Meanwhile Minehead Reserves, who have completed their fixtures in the Premier Division of the Taunton Saturday League, play Redgate in the final of the West Somrset Rosebowl at The Aerodrome, Westonzoyland, on Thursday, April 25.
