THE Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Seniors started off their golfing week with a 6,6,6 competition which involved random teams of three taking the best single Stableford score for the first half dozen holes. This is followed by the best two scores for the next six holes with all three scores to count on the remaining six holes.
A total of nine teams took part in the competition of which the top three participating were well ahead of the rest in the scoring.
At the end of what was a most enjoyable round of golf in first place with 79 points were Martin Hole, Mike Kelly and ‘Tiny’ Welford. Five points behind them in second place with 74 were Chris Durman, Graham Troman and Nevile Parsons while in third place it was Steve Gay, Graham Stone and Phil Bowden who carded a 69 between them.
On Wednesday the Minehead Seniors took part in a Bogie competition and with weather turning out as it was forecast there was some low scoring in what turned out to be a close run contest between members.
The winner of the competition with an impressive -6 was Sandy Lyons, one in front of second placed Andy Hodgson who edged into second place on countback ahead of Graham Smith after both returned to the clubhouse on -5.
The highlight of the week for the Minehead Seniors was the Midsummer Bash on Friday - a social event that, as well as playing 18 holes of golf, was followed by a meal.
The format for each bash has varied over the years but on this occasion it was played as a Texas Scramble.
The day served up excellent weather which cushioned the early shotgun start for those who usually assemble for a later tee off time.
At the end of the round of golf that was played as always in the right spirit the winners with 59, two ahead of their nearest rivals, were Dave Oatridge, Roger Green and Sandy Lyons. However it was a close run thing for second place with two teams returning with 61. However following countback it was Rob Poirrier, Tim Evans and Graham Stone who just edged ahead of third placed Paul Saunders, Willie Brown and Tim Tennant.
The grateful thanks of everyone who took part goes to Dave Oatridge for organising the event so successfully, this despite he and his team managing the win! Thanks must also go to Sarah and all the kitchen and bar staff for all their efforts to help make this another great golfing occasion. The meal was first class and went down a treat, contributing to a most enjoyable day.
