MINEHEAD Boxing Club middleweight David Lewis scored a unanimous points win in a bout at Bideford last Friday.
He was up against local boy Alex Dovell, who received a tremendous reception when he entered the ring.
In the first round, Dovell tried to pressurise Lewis by moving forward with long-range lefts and rights, but Lewis’s superior footwork kept him out of danger.
At the start of the second round, the Minehead boxer took complete control, catching his opponent with some sharp, accurate jabs and uppercuts.
The third round saw Lewis put even more pressure on the home boy and the home crowd started to warm to his abilities.
Whatever the brave Dovell tried to do, he came up short as Lewis seemed to have all the answers, and the officials overwhelmingly gave him the decision.
l Ethan Iliffe represented Watchet Physical Training and Amateur Boxing Club in a tournament at Bristol’s Henbury Social Club on Saturday and won a unanimous points decision against 17-year-old Tom Jenkins from Baker Street ABC in Gloucester.
Iliffe produced a skilful display against a shorter and gritty opponent, with his straight lead hand his most useful tool as he clinically gained points by taking advantage of his longer reach.
With each round, Iliffe stepped up the pace, and his timing and judgement of distance were impressive as he deservedly beat a determined opponent.
