WIVELISCOMBE RFC Under 16s hosted two touring teams under the lights at Plain Pond on what was finally a dry evening. Spectators and supporters were treated to some very good games by youngsters who will go on to play for their clubs at senior level - and hopefully win representative honours in the future.
Playing two shorten games both North Bristol and Tottionians arrived eager, with enthusiasm, a friendly manner, and polite nature throughout the squads which are an asset to both clubs. First up was North Bristol, with both teams showing strength in the pack, some great rucking by us took some turnover ball, with quick hands through the backs saw some space open up and the try line reached. Some quick passages of play saw North Bristol score quickly and a half time score of 12-10 to Wivey. The second half saw similar game play in the pack with superb tackling but North Bristol found a gap scoring under the post to leave an easy conversion. Wivey, with time running out of time saw a penalty within our twenty two, a set move tap and go and the ball move through the backs and try in the corner for 17 all, leaving a difficult conversion which unfortunately fell short of the goal posts. Final score 17-17. Next up Wivey sat on the sidelines and watched the two touring teams take on each other, with some more great play making for a great evenings rugby. Wivey then took on Tottionians who arrived from Southampton. Some great work from the Wivey pack saw the backs again looking for the ball and with quick movement through the hands and some lovely movement to cut inside their opponents Wivey took the lead, and working well as a team the squad cemented the win and denying the opposition a score. Final score 19-0. We would like to thank everyone who made the evening happen and helped in anyway, with a special mention to referee Stew who was on the pitch for all three games. Also a massive thank you for the two teams for choosing Wiveliscombe as a venue to play rugby on tour; we hope you have a great weekend in the West Country. Both teams chose a Man of the match: North Bristols MOM was Ben P; Tottonians MOM was Jack L As we look forward to next season this squad become Colts and are looking for new recruits to join our Colts team for the 2024-25 season!
