POLICE have taken to social media to explain the large presence of police, Coastguard and military vehicles at Butlin’s in Minehead - and the message is don’t panic.

A statement has been sent by Avon and Somerset Police to press across the county to reassure the public there the presence of emergency vehicles is due to training and not an emergency.

Police said in a statement: “We wish to make the media aware that a pre-planned training exercise is taking place at Butlin's in Minehead today (Tuesday, January 14), involving agencies including police, fire and ambulance services, as well as HM Coastguard, Royal Air Force and British Army.

“Emergency responder vehicles will be sited at various locations around Minehead. Please be assured this is not in response to a live incident, but purely an exercise to test agencies’ plans as to how they would respond in the event of a major incident.

“The exercise is due to finish at approximately 4pm.”
