AN exhibition of works by Sir Alfred Munnings and the ‘Exmoor School’ has opened in the Doone Valley Gallery, Malmsmead, and will run until April 1 next year.
Described as ‘a captivating selling exhibition celebrating the artistic legacy of Exmoor’s landscape’, featured works include some of the most influential artists and craftspeople of the 20th century.
It brings together a collection of paintings, drawings, and pottery by Sir Alfred Munnings, Robert Bevan, Ethelbert White, Charles Knight, Lucy Kemp-Welch, Rachel Ann le Bas, Frederick Hall, Harry Phelan Gibb, and the celebrated potter Waistel Cooper, among others.
Each artist is renowned in their own right and lived or worked on Exmoor, which profoundly influenced their work and style.
Sir Alfred Munnings, best known for his equestrian paintings and as a former president of the Royal Academy, is the centerpiece.
The ‘Exmoor School’ reference is a loose term used to describe the collection of artists and craftspeople who were drawn to Exmoor’s rolling hills, dramatic coastlines, and timeless rural life.
They found inspiration in the area’s natural beauty and distinct atmosphere, which was vividly captured in their works.
The exhibition celebrates the diversity of their interpretations and their contributions to the artistic narrative of the area.
