HUNDREDS of people took part in a New Year’s Day dip in the sea at Minehead Beach and raised more than £5,500 for charity.
It was the third year running that St Margaret’s Hospice had organised the fancy dress sea swim.
Among the 200 fancy dress costumes on show were a Star Wars Stormtrooper, John Travolta’s flares, and a banana.
With an air temperature hovering at only 7C, many of the swimmers were grateful for the warmth provided by their St Margaret’s bobble hats.
Beyond just keeping everybody a bit warmer, the hats served as a poignant reminder of the cause they were supporting.
All funds raised during the event went to St Margaret’s Hospice Care, with families and friends taking part in groups of five raising a minimum of £50.
The sum could cover the cost of an hour of specialist nursing care for somebody in need on the hospice’s in-patient unit.
Misti Bliss, a member of Minehead Mermaids, said: “Once you are in, it is absolutely amazing, the thrill.
“And when you come out, you are like YES.”
Post-swim, Nelly’s Nosh provided a free hot drink to warm the courageous dippers, and also served a variety of hot breakfast items.
The success of the event was further bolstered by sponsorship by Wilkie May and Tuckwood, and lively tunes and music provided by West Somerset Radio helping to keep people’s spirits high.
St Margaret’s event manager Merle Harrison-Croft thanked everybody for their support.
She said: “St Margaret’s is thankful for the dedication of every participant and their large group of spectators.
“While the weather was kind to us, the waves were big, and watching every participant take the plunge, and enjoy the challenge was really inspiring.
“We are delighted to have raised so much money for the hospice and anticipate that figure rising over the coming days and weeks as sponsorship continues to come in.”
