THE idea of a community shop for Kilve is to be explored by a steering group being set up by the parish council.

It follows the closure in February of the village stores and Post Office after serving the community for more than 60 years.

The council arranged a public meeting in the village hall to discuss the possibility of setting up a community shop and found widespread support.

It has also surveyed residents on what would encourage them to shop there so councillors could have a fuller picture of the village’s feelings.

A spokesperson said: “For most people living in rural areas, a shop, with a Post Office and perhaps a café, is a vital lifeline.

“For some, especially those without transport, it serves as an important connection to the world beyond their front door.

“These amenities provide a meeting place and essential services, and are an important lynchpin of village life.

“Much of the appeal of our village rests on its sense of community, which is the reason many people have moved here and remain here.

“Following the closure of Kilve Stores we are looking at what can be done to replace some aspects of the services that Matt, his family, and staff provided for so many years.”

One suggestion put forward was to look at running a community shop as part of the village’s The Hood Arms public house, possibly with a café and a parcel drop off/pick-up facility.

Parish clerk Karen Scott said: “The public meeting was really to explain to people what steps they have to go through to set up a community shop.

“A steering group is being formed to drive it forward and look at the options.

“We have a couple of ideas about premises.”
