ILLUMINATED Christmas trees for Watchet’s town centre shops and businesses have been saved after volunteers stepped forward at the eleventh hour to help.
The town’s chamber of commerce (WACET) chairman John Richards last week warned the trees might not be put up this year because only one member had stepped forward to help him with the work.
Chamber members and their friends have traditionally put up and dressed the trees for the festive season for the past 15 years, with more than 80 premises now taking part.
But Mr Richards said despite having put out several calls for help this year, only one person had offered, but it would have been too much work for them to do.
Now, enough people have offered their support after the Free Press highlighted the chamber’s plight, and Mr Richards said: “Thanks to the negative publicity last week, WACET now has enough volunteers to do the illuminated trees.
“WACET are working in partnership with the town centre group, sharing the workload of doing the trees, which we are very pleased to announce.
“The WACET ‘Late Night Extravaganza’ for this year was also delegated to the town centre group to provide, and they are doing a marvellous job of this as well.”
Any other volunteers who still want to help with putting up the trees, and also with the task of taking them down again in January, can contact Mr Richards by calling him on 07836 239932 or emailing to [email protected].
