A SECOND heavy rainstorm in exactly three weeks has again seen the A358 in Combe Florey closed overnight due to a mud slide.

County council highways contractors were able to open emergency access by this morning but the road remained closed to other traffic with diversions set up between Williton and Taunton.

Thunder and lightening hit the area on Monday night and caused a second mudslide and flooding in exactly the same part of the road near the West Somerset Railway bridge as in last month’s incident.

Previously, contractors had to remove about 100 tonnes of mud - and potatoes - which covered the highway and the road was closed until late afternoon.

Highways engineers were again quickly on site to deal with the latest incident, as shown in the photographs.

Buses of Somerset is now diverting it’s number 28 Minehead to Taunton service via Raleigh Cross while the road closure is in place.

Somerset County Council does not expect the road to reopen for several more hours.
