REMEMBRANCE parades and services were being held across West Somerset and Exmoor this weekend (November 11 and 12).

In Minehead, a two-minute Armistice Day silence was taking place at the war memorial on North Hill at 11 am, while the traditional parade from the town centre to the war memorial was scheduled for Sunday afternoon with a service at 3 pm.

On Saturday evening the Minehead Male Voice Choir was giving a Remembrance concert in St Andrew's Church, in Wellington Square, at 7.15 pm.

Members of the congregation joined together in a community project for Minehead Avenue Methodist Church to knit and crochet poppies to form a cascade over the pulpit, led by Margaret Lintern.

The West Somerset Railway Heritage Trust was holding a Service of Remembrance at Bishops Lydeard Station on Saturday for any relatives of Great Western Railway employees who worked on the West Somerset Railway’s Taunton to Minehead branch line and who gave their lives fighting for the country.

The West Somerset Brass Band was performing in a Remembrance Concert being held in Williton Pavilion at 7 pm on Saturday which was also featuring a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn and vintage cabaret by Daisy Alexandra.

In Wiveliscombe, a Remembrance Day Parade was leaving The Square at 10.15 am and marching to St Andrew’s Church for a Remembrance service starting at 10.45 am.

Watchet’s traditional parade was due to be held on Sunday with a service at 3 pm, while a Sunday service was also being held at Alcombe War Memorial 12 noon.

St Petrock’s Church, Timberscombe, was holding its Act of Remembrance on Sunday at 10.45 am with a retiring collection for the Royal British Legion.

An hour-long Service of Remembrance was also being held in St Dubricius Church, Porlock, on Sunday at 9.30 am, followed by a walk to Porlock War Memorial, where wreath laying will take place and a two minutes silence observed at 11.05 am.

A parish eucharist with an Act of Remembrance was being held in St Michael the Archangel Church, Alcombe, at 10am, while services in Dunster and Wootton Courtenay were also timed for 10.45 am.

Dunster First School held a service at the village war memorial on Friday.
