A FUND-raising appeal to help West Somerset zoo Tropiquaria survive the winter is more than a quarter of the way to its target after less than a week.

Nearly 100 people have so far donated a total of £2,575 for the zoo, in Washford Cross, near Watchet.

Zoo director Chris Moiser said: “Thank you all so much.

“This has heartened us no end, particularly with the offers of help that we have received.”

Mr Moiser is hoping to raise £10,000 to keep Tropiquaria going until next year’s main holiday season gets underway.

The money was needed to cope with the effects of falling visitor numbers this summer, Government increases to the minimum wage and National Insurance payments, and the rising costs of energy.

Mr Moiser, who has run Tropiquaria with fellow director Jane Bassett for 17 years, said the changes had eaten into money which would have been set aside to cope with the quieter winter months.

He said: “With the cost of living sending costs spiralling for the zoo, and a reduced season for tourism this year, we need to raise more income to get us through the winter months ahead.

“If you can help, please consider doing so.”

Mr Moiser’s GoFundMe online appeal, which can be found here, has also generated support on social media from people living near and far.

Olivia Fennell-Smith said: “This beautiful zoo needs funding fast.

“Can all the local businesses please help sponsor these guys, it is a fab family day out, they deserve every penny they get.

“Please, please, help keep this wonderful family zoo open.”

Farnham, Surrey, resident Becky Webb wished Tropiquaria the ‘best of luck’, and said: “Our kids love this place and are regular visitors whenever they see the grandparents.”

Another supporter, Alona De Havilland, said: “Donated. I have never visited, but the Covid animal updates made me smile.”

Scott McKenzie said: “A donation made in lieu of Christmas presents from family.

“Some goodies on the way for the animals, too.”

Tropiquaria this week moved to its winter opening hours of 10.30am to 4pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday only.
