DUNSTER Castle, like many other National Trust properties, is steeped in history boasting chilling tales of the supernatural.
With a past filled with grisly stories and eerie events, it is no surprise that reports of ghostly sightings and strange sensations continue to surface.
Visitors embarking on the castle’s ghost tours will be guided through centuries of haunted history in the build up to Halloween.
Led by experienced guides, people will experience tours which share spine-tingling accounts of recent sightings, mysterious apparitions, and the sound of phantom footsteps echoing through supposedly empty rooms.
The presence of ghosts is felt frequently throughout Dunster Castle, with one of the most frequently reported apparitions being ‘The Man in Green’.
Staff working in the 17th-century stable block, now the National Trust’s gift shop, claim to have often seen a figure dressed in green walking through the shop before vanishing.
His unsettling presence has led visitors to question if any sinister events ever took place there.
Adding to the mystery, reports of a strange green light have emerged, seen floating across the shop before disappearing. Even more bizarre, unopened boxes in the shop have been found spoiled by an unexplained "brown, sticky substance."
But ‘The Man in Green’ is not the only spirit said to haunt Dunster Castle. One cleaner reported a chilling encounter with a man in an “old-fashioned military uniform.”
She later discovered the room she was cleaning was once a dormitory for Civil War soldiers – a detail she couldn’t have known beforehand.
In the dungeon beneath the gatehouse, the remains of a seven-foot-tall man were discovered, still shackled by his wrists and ankles to the wall. Several other skeletons were also found nearby.
Though no ghost sightings have been reported in this area, dogs consistently refuse to approach, shying away from the steps close to where the bodies were uncovered.
Sensible, flat shoes and warm clothing are recommended due to the steep hill leading to the castle and uneven terrain throughout the tour.
Booking for the tours, which are being on October 28 and 31, is essential.
