MINEHEAD won their fifth successive game in the Under 16 section of the Somerset Girls Football League when they beat Wellington 6-1 away.
Minehead, notoriously quick starters this season, kept to the script as they quickly opened the scoring with Erin yet again! The striker found her way through and slotted home comfortably to make it 1-0.
Next defender turned attacker Mabel showed her class in front of goal as she ripped the Wellington defence apart for the remainder of the half with her blistering pace and well timed runs. Mabel scored a 15 minute hat-trick with Emily, Evie and Erin all involved in finding the winger in attacking areas.
Mabel displayedclinical composed finishes as she bagged her third hat-trick of the season in emphatic fashion.
Minehead, now 4-0 up, relentlessly kept attacking with Emily, Ruby, Jaz and Lilly combining well in midfield. On occasions Wellington did play threatening through balls which were often dealt with brilliantly at the back. One of these through balls proved fruitful for Minehead as Bonita found keeper Carly in a tight situatio. This decision to find the ice-cold Carly opened up space as Wellington pressed. As Minehead played their way out the ball found Alana out-wide who struck the killer pass to Erin who completed the first-half scoring to make it 5-0 at the break.
As the second half started Minehead would be forgiven for feeling that the game was done given the scoreline. Chance creations were still apparent without reward but it was Wellington that seemed the livelier of the two sides.
Wellington adopted a more defensive shape and played to win balls in 50/50 duals and quickly counter. This did lead to more defensive work for Bonita, Izzy, Lucy and Alana at the back. The defensive efforts were once again positive and Carly in goal kept sweeping up through balls.
The second half was petering out with Minehead still in control with good football at times but not moving into the next gear.
As the game entered its final stages life was kicked back into the game as Wellington won a free kick on the half-way line. A long looping ball found the Wellington striker in acres of space after a fine first touch as she got Wellington a consolation goal for their 2nd half efforts.
However it was Minehead who would make the final mark of the match as Evie got a deserved goal after a game full of chances for the winger. Evie always getting into good positions, tested the goalkeeper throughout and was unfortunate not to score prior. This time Evie won the dual with the GK as she burst through with her pace and finished into the bottom corner, snapping up her ninth goal of the season.
