THE autumn has seen a positive start by West Somerset College’s new under 14 (Year 9) rugby team, who have played some exciting open running rugby and notched up three impressive wins.
In their first game they beat Bishop Foxes School 31-5 at home and followed this with an even more convincing 40-5 win over Taunton Academy.
They have also beaten a strong team from Courtfields School in Wellington 46-17.
Only two players turned up to the first training session, but gradually numbers have grown.
Lewis Davis and Martell Payn have proved effective leaders and pulled the side together, while new players Rob Parsons, Brendon Pentland, Alex Foster, Aaron Bowen and Will Stenner have all shown real flair for the physicality of the game.
They have been supported by some experienced and powerful players including Sam Gorton, Joel Floyd, Alfie Gallagher, David Morris, Jake Cunningham, Ben Lock, Ben Williams and Theo Warwick.
Martell Payn scored hat-tricks against both Taunton and Courtfields, with both opposition coaches agreeing he could have an exciting future in the game.
