WATCHET Town’s last game of the season on Saturday saw them win 2-0 away to Ashcott in the first division of the Uhlsport Somerset County League, enabling them to clinch the runners-up spot.

Already assured of promotion, a goal in each half brought the visitors victory on a ground where they had never played previously.

The game was a generally scrappy affair with both sides relying heavily on the long ball in the first half. Josh Aspey was unable to make clean contact with a few attempts when his pace had put him in good positions before from his corner Charley Clausen's firm header beat the keeper, but a defender nodded the ball off the line.

Adam Jefferies then forced a full length save with a ground shot, but Watchet were looking far from comfortable and were grateful for safe handling and a couple of smart stops from Adam Bishop.

A little against the run of play Watchet took the lead when Kieran Bailey won possession for Alfie Cox to find Billy Jones inside the area and after being upended as he turned his marker the striker scored from the penalty spot despite the keeper getting both hands to the ball.

Making his last appearance before retiring Bishop then showed how he will be missed by coming off his line to keep his side in front at the break with an important block.

Ashcott continued to threaten more than they produced in the final third after the interval while the visitors still struggled and there were a few feisty encounters, with players from both sides involved in one particularly ugly scuffle, before Watchet finally gained a degree of control.

Ed Townsend sent a cut back from Riley Willis too high and then a close range header from Ali Harrison from a Willis corner rattled the goal frame.

Making a rare appearance substitute Chris Sully played a one-two with Townsend only to shoot too close to the keeper when well-placed. After the young home custodian was forced to retire following a 50-50 challenge Watchet gained the breathing space of a second goal when another Willis corner was palmed out invitingly for Charley Clausen to drive unerringly into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Despite a few more hairy moments at the back Watchet held on to finish second  after losing only once in their last 17 matches.
