THE SENIORS at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club commenced last week with the presentation of the much vaunted Trafalgar Tankard by Seniors captain Martyn Westbury to Dave Oatridge and Roger Green, retaining the trophy they won the previous year.
In conditions more akin to a Vietnamese paddy field, Minehead Seniors’ struggled to play a Texas Scramble on Wednesday.
The course was fully open with no temporary greens although so high is the water table that a drop more rain would necessitate the construction of an Ark.
Nine teams took to the tee and unsurprisingly, scores reflected the conditions.
Those who teed off early benefitted most favourably, so it was no surprise that the team of Mark Ruttley, Roger Read and Richard Baker took the course by the scruff of the neck, recording a nett score of 64.
Second place on countback with 65 went to Steve Gay, Roger Green and Mark Swallow, just ahead of Dave Walmsley, Sandy Lyons and a very mud splattered Willie Brown.
Sadly the weather conditions once again conspired against the proposed Medal competition on Friday.
