EVERYONE at Jeremy Scott’s Higher Holworthy Farm has had a pretty hectic time of it during the month of March.
At the end of his most successful few week’s since taking out his licence, the Brompton Regis maestro reflected on what’s happened.
“It has been a bit mad this last month; we had our second treble of the season followed by Golden Ace winning the 2025 Unibet Champion Hurdle. That took a few days to sink in and I love watching the replays of Lorcan crossing the line, hand in the air in celebration. . . and then going OMG, hand on head is sheer disbelief!
“ What Just Happened! Absolutely bizarre, at least both State Man and Constitution Hill were both ok and fight another day, which may be a rematch at Punchestown!
“We had a great lead into Cheltenham with a treble at Exeter on the Friday prior to the Festival. King Of The Lake won for the third time this season for his enthusiastic syndicate, Lake Side Racing, and provided the first leg of the treble.
“Captain Boudet and Bampton shortly followed! Captain Boudet won his second chase this season under David Noonan benefiting from first time blinkers, with Joe Cotton finishing a good third in the same race.
“Bampton Star won his third chase at Exeter, his first this season for his owners, George and Glenda Giles. Zainy Champ ran a great race in second in the novice hurdle as did Native Moon to fill the runner up spot.
“Elusiveness was unluckily bumped into and finished fifth. From those beaten runners, Elusiveness has since followed up with a win at Taunton, wearing first time blinkers, Lorcan’s first ride back after winning the Champion Hurdle.”
As he said: “They have only just found me!”Next up was Joe Cotton who we had found a nice race to run him in, a £40,000 Handicap Chase at Fontwell, which he had qualified for in November. We put the blinkers on to help sharpen him up, and Rex gave him a beautiful ride, winning by a length. We are delighted for his owner Philip Moore and his mother, Val, who is Joe’s biggest supporter! A huge credit to Fontwell for putting on such brilliant prize money, who were rewarded with a competitive final and we will be aiming a couple at the race next season.
“There are few opportunities for these lower grade horses to race for good prize money so it’s good to take advantage when you can, especially when it pays off!
“The third runner from Exeter who has followed up is Native Moon who won well at Ascot. He has been running well this season, finishing in the prize money but not quite getting his head in front. There will be more to come from him next season.
March has been a little bit surreal and hopefully the form will continue. However it was also a very dry month, with the word ‘firm’ appearing in the going description. Although it is great for lambing, it is not ideal for racing. We are closely monitoring the weather forecast for any trace of rain, it may well be that we will need to travel to find some nice good, ideally good to soft ground.
“April is renowned for rain so surely there will be some soon.”
