AT LAST the ladies section of Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club have managed to play more competitions, now that the weather has started to improve with more sunshine and less rain.

On Sunday, 5th May a Stableford was played. The winner was Sue Garwood with 34 points, 2nd was Jenny Elliott with 25 points, on count back from Liz Welsh, also with 25 points.

On Thursday 9th May there was another Stableford, the winner was Deano Carlin with 37 points, 2nd was Annette O’Hare with 27 points and 3rd was Ruth Ball with 26 points.

On the 16th two cups were played for, the Dickenson Cup, for Ladies with a handicap of 21 and under. The winner was Jenny Elliott with 93 – 20 = 73, 2nd was Leslie Davis with 98 – 21 =77 and 3rd Sara Hill with 98 – 20 = 75. The winner will go on to play in a county competition. 

The Barlow Cup for Ladies with a handicap of 22 – 36 - the winner was Annette O’Hare with 37 points, 2nd was Corinne Rees with 33 points, on countback from Ruth Ball, also with 33 points. The winner of this will go on to play in a county competition. Also taking place was a Grass Roots competition for Ladies with a handicap of 37 – 54 - the winner was Hazel Binding with 31 points, 2nd was Catharine Binding with 30 points and 3rd was Jacqueline Brocklehurst with 29 points.

On the 23rd it was a medal competition. The winner was Annette O’Hare with 102 – 23 = 79, 2nd was Pat Lucas with 113 – 33 = 80, and 3rd was Janet Handley with 119 – 39 = 80.

On the 30th the competition was the Coronation Foursomes, played in pairs, taking alternate shoots on a very windy day. The winners were Ginnette Bowyer & Kay Luckett with 26 points, 2nd were Pat Lucas & Jennifer James with 22 points and 3rd were Anne Oglesby & Leslie Davis with 21 points. The scores show the severity of the wind.

As the weather has improved matches have been played - a friendly against Tiverton at home which was halved and a Mixed match against Oake Manor, at home which was won 4-3. Two Wessex have been played, the results are disappointing and do not reflect how close the individual matches were, away at Burnham & Barrow we lost 4-10 and at Taunton 7 Pickeridge we lost 0-7.
