THE SENIORS section at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club have had another busy week which commenced on Monday with a Texas Scramble competition in which five drives each were to count towards the score.

The stiff breeze that had been forecast to develop during the course of the morning did arrive as promised, but despite this, the winning team of Dave Walmsley, Bob Dainty and Nigel Trevelyan managed five birdies in accumulating what turned out to be their winning score of 62.0.

The competition for the places was keen with four teams finishing on 63.0. However after countback second place went to Graham Smith, Dave Ball and Edward Frewin who edged in front of Graham Troman, Chris Durman and Sandy Lyons who had to settle for third spot.

On Wednesday a Pinehurst Greensomes competition was played, which turned out to be another close and keenly contested encounter, with all the top five teams separated by just two points.

In first place with an excellent 44 points were the pairing of Nigel Moore and Roger Green. Second place on 43 points, just one behind the winners were  Dave Oatridge and Sandy Lyons on countback from third placed Graham Troman and Edward Frewin. Fourth place and also on 43 points were Roger Read and Tony Connolly.

Friday saw one of the season’s highlights taking place with the match between the Young Seniors and The Sleepy Joes.

This eagerly awaited betterball competition comprised eight pairings with the cut off age being 68 years young.

With fine weather and the course in excellent condition, all teams took to the challenge with considerable fervour under the wily captaincies of Martin Hole (Young Seniors) and Graham Stone (Sleepy Joes).

As you would expect with this sort of competition the outcome was fiercely contested and every shot crucial, with the game going to the wire and the final grouping determining the outcome.

In the event, the pairing of Dave Walmsley and Bob Arthington managed a par three, nett two on the 18th to claim victory over Doug Hayhoe and John Burrow and a victory for the Young Seniors by 4.5 / 3.5.

Well done to the winners and a tremendous day’s golf all round; this was one of the highlights of the summer so far.
