WATCHET Town began their home programme in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport S$omerset County Football League a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of bottom of the table Somerton Town.

Following two encouraging displays the Red & Blacks produced a disjointed and subdued showing which lacked energy, aggression and creativity.

In front of a large crowd on a sunny afternoon it was the visitors who had the better team work and greater desire to make things happen which enabled them to deservedly register their first league points of the season.

From the outset Watchet found their opponents hard to penetrate despite having plenty of the ball with much of their play lacking in pace and movement.

Somerton stuck to their game plan and after Billy Jones had shot wide at one end then cousin Vinnie Jones had saved well at the other, it was the visitors who gained an interval lead when Watchet conceded a free kick out on the left and a well delivered cross was met at the near post by striker Holland's glancing header into the net.

The Red & Blacks fared little better in their quest for some cohesion at the start of the second half despite some early substitutions.

Somerton were beginning to find some gaping holes in the home rearguard and after making one stop keeper Jones did very well to plunge low to his left to push another goalbound effort around an upright for a corner. It served only to delay a second goal from the visitors when their lively left winger Brown found it all too easy to elude two defenders near the byeline to cut in and beat Jones with a low angled drive.

The same player had squandered some other chances from good positions by shooting off-target before making this one count. Watchet forced a few corners which caused the Somerton defence some concerns, but they defended fairly solidly on the whole before Watchet gained a lifeline.

A misplaced pass fell into the path of Eddie Townsend who whipped an instant cross into the box where Brandon Walsh rose to place his header beyond the diving keeper into the bottom corner of the net.Watchet then had a golden opportunity to draw level when Aerron Clausen sent in a pinpoint cross from the right, but Chris Barrett was unable to keep his close range header down.

With Watchet committed to pushing men forward Somerton made the game safe when Holland went clear down the middle to slot past the advancing Jones.
