REPAIRS underway to a damaged public toilets block in Minehead town centre are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
The Summerland Road Car Park toilets suffered significant structural damage when a car crashed into the building last October, resulting in a temporary closure.
A temporary ceiling support was put in place to keep the facility in use following the incident, but now a complete reconstruction of the damaged wall has started.
Town council clerk Ben Parker said the work would improve the building’s durability and weatherproofing through modern construction methods, including a rendered finish, would enhance its appearance.
Mr Parker said the council had no choice but to close the women’s toilets and Changing Places facilities while the work was ongoing, while the men’s side of the building would stay open if safe access could be ensured.
He said: “The safety and wellbeing of our residents remains our top priority.
“The project will also incorporate additional maintenance work, including repairs to door frames and replacement of damaged doors, maximising the efficiency of the closure period.
“The reconstruction works are fully funded through insurance and will be carried out by a trusted local contractor.”
Planning permission and building regulations approval for the work was not required because it was outside the North Hill conservation area and constituted repairs without affecting the building's design or footprint.
Mr Parker said: “While the closure of these central facilities will impact both residents and visitors, the winter period typically sees reduced usage.”
He said the insurance company’s settlement offer for the work aligned with a quotation the council had received from an experienced and trusted local tradesman.
Alternative public toilets could be found in Blenheim Gardens, Quay West Car Park, and Warren Road opposite the main entrance to Butlin’s.
