WIVELISCOMBE won their first game of the season in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League when they beat North Newton at home by 44 runs.

Put into bat first, Wiveliscombe's innings was dominated by Jake Woodward who scored 111 not out, his innings coming off 80 balls and included 12 fours.

Opener Richard Morrison scored 32 and Conor Ashworth 30 as Wiveliscombe piled up 226-5 in their 40 overs.

Mike Barham with 2-44 and Stephen Hayes with 2-26 were North Newton's most successful bowlers. Luke Haysham also took 1-35.

North Newton never seriously looked like getting the runs after losing opener Dan Toft (2) early on although Dave Worthington (44) and Will Marchant (29) shared in a second-wicket stand of 51. Their top scorer was James Stone who hit 53 off only 43 balls. The visitors ended their 40 overs with a score of 182-9.

Henry Welch led the Wivey bowling attack with 4-47 in seven overs, while Matthew Redwood took 2-11 in eight tidy overs and Ashworth claimed 2-38.

Wiveliscombe claimed 34 points for the first time this season and moved up to eighth in the table.

Wiveliscombe will be looking for another victory on Saturday when they play away to Taunton 2nd XI who are now bottom.
