PORLOCK Reserves claimed the local bragging rights when they beat Minehead Colts 2-0 at home in the second division of the Taunton & District Saturday League at the weekend.
The game started with both teams playing some brilliant football but neither side was able to score in the first 30 minutes. It was not until a corner kick was recycled back out to Declan Paterson which he played past Minehead’s back line and Oliver Heathfield tapped the ball into the net - but sadly the ‘goal’t was disallowed.
Minehead then enjoyed some very good spells but the home defence remained strong with nothing troubling goalkeeper Joe Ferris as the half ended goalless
Ten minutes after the re-start an exquisite reversed ball from Karl Middleton-Smith broke through the Minehead defence and saw Joe Fitzsimmons slot the ball past the keeper to put Porlock ahead.
Despite being in arrears the Colts never let their heads drop and continued to push for an equaliser. However the back line of Jordan Simpson, Harry Kivell, Ryan Parsons and Kevin Sparks nullified anything that Minehead threw at them.
With the game still on a tipping point it was Porlock that took full advantage of the wet conditions as a left footed shot from Declan Paterson was spilled by the keeper and Fitzimmons tapped the ball in to the net to double his account.
The hosts sensed they could go for more which they did with some link up play on the wing from Danny Lynam and Fitszimmons which saw Oliver Heathfield slot it past the keeper, but the ‘goal’ was adjudged offside, so the game remained at 2-0 to the hosts.
This was a great win for Porlock Reserves and will boost their confidence ahead of another challenging local derby against Watchet Reserves on Saturday, September 15.
