WIVELISCOMBE went down 29-12 at home to St Ives in Counties One Western West, never finding their best form against a team they beat in Cornwall early in the season.

The visitors used their larger forwards to limit the home team’s set piece possession with Wivey’s scrum never able to have the upper hand and line out ball was also patchy.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Wiveliscombe scored the opening try of the game on fifteen minutes with centre Tom Pearce finishing off a period of pressure in the visitors’ twenty two. Fellow centre Will Thorne added the conversion for a 7-0 early lead.

Fly half Rhys Brownfield opened the visitors’ scoring not long after, kicking a penalty after a high tackle by the home defence to close the gap between the teams to four points.

St Ives took the lead on the half hour with their first try of the game coming from fullback Matty Turton with Rhys Brownfield converting for a 10-7 advantage.

Second row Dan Lawther crossed for St Ives second try, finishing off good approach play from his fellow forwards. Brownfield added his second conversion of the game for a 17-7 half-time lead.

Playing down the slope in the second half the visitors added another two tries to secure a four try bonus point. Matty Turton crossed for his second try of the match with winger Rhodri Lease adding the fourth try. Rhys Brownfield added his third conversion to make the scores 29-7 to the visitors.

Wiveliscombe finished the game with a flourish and scored the final try of the game through centre Will Thorne. However, it was a disappointing result for Wivey who have now lost three matches in a row although they are still lying in sixth place.
