WIVELISCOMBE’S young side lost by seven wickets away to promotion-chasing Yeovil in the second division of the Somerset Cricket League.
Already relegated before the match, Wiveliscombe opted to bat first and were dismissed for only 57 in 25.5 overs. Only one batter Henry Walsh (12), coming in at No 8, notched double figures as Steven Redwood (4-16), Tom Redwood (3-9) and Matt Dyer (2-5) bowled the home side to a comfortable win.
Yeovil suffered two early losses before Sonny Dennett (31) and Steven Redwood (16 not out) brought up the victory.
Defeat left Wiveliscombe 72 points adrift at the bottom of the table with North Newton likely to join them in the third division next season.
At the other end of the table Weston super Mare are in a good place to win the title after beating Taunton away by two wickets. Taunton scored 161-7 with Connor Burrows scoring a run-a-ball 57 while Oliver O’Livery hit 30 not out. Jason Neave scored a match-winning 33 for Weston while Caleb Alexander knocked 37.
Second-placed Illton kept in touch with the leaders after gaining a 64-run success against West Monkton. Ilton scored 228 all out with Matthew Knight four runs short of scoring a century.
