WATCHET Town failed to cause an upset when they went down by 3 goals to 1 at home to second-placed Chilcompton Sports in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport Somerset County Football League.
The only real surprise was that the slick-passing visiting outfit did not triumph by a bigger margin, but Watchet stuck to their task after trailing 2-0 at the interval to keep the final scoreline respectable.
Chilli gave early warnings of their intentions with one effort which hit an upright and another striking the home bar, while for Watchet Alfie Cox tried his luck with a couple of long range shots which were off-target.
The visitors took the lead when a long diagonal ball released dangerman Gay to cut in and square a pass for opposite winger Robinson to sweep home from 12 yards.
A big score seemed likely when an unfortunate own goal from Josh Aspey made it 2-0 before the half hour mark and there was a goalline clearance from Ryan Wilkinson before the home bar was rattled again.
Watchet worked hard after the break only to fall further behind when a deep cross from the right touchline was headed beyond the reach of Vinnie Jones, who made a fine save from close range soon afterwards.
Olly Prescott forced a fine stop at the near post from the visiting keeper and Watchet were rewarded for their pluck when Wilkinson netted at the far post from point blank range in a goalmouth scramble after Billy Jones had struck the framework. But despite some huffing and puffing it proved to be only a consolation.
