MINEHEAD U12 Girls travelled to Yeovil to play Pen Mill in the quarter finals of the Somerset Girls County Cup. But, after battling to a 3-3 draw, lost a penalty shootout..

With Pen Mill sitting only one point behind them in the league table, the West Somerset side knew they were in for a tough, well matched game.

The start of the game saw Minehead finding their feet in unfamiliar surroundings, and as they settled into the game Pen Mill took an opportunity to take an early lead and scored the opening goal.

Minehead got straight back into the game. Their team work and determination paid off and in the 11th minute they scored to make it 1-1.

The visitors continued to work hard to try to gain the lead, which they did when the goal of the day came from their centre back, taking advantage of a loose ball and hitting the back of the net from the half way line! When the half time whistle went, the score was 2-1 to Minehead.

Minehead’s back three worked tirelessly to prevent any scoring opportunity falling to the home team. At the other end the visitors created a number of chances, but unfortunately they struggled to find the back of the net. With 10 minutes to go, however, the home team scored making it 2-2.

Minehead’s work rate was on top form, as they continued to display good football with a team effort of link up play, and eventually they managed to score to regain the lead with two minutes to go!

However, with seconds remaining, Pen Mill managed to create an opportunity and with the final kick of the game scored an equaliser forcing the tie into a penalty shootout with the home side eventually taking the victory in sudden death.
